It's tax time, and it's not just the government that wants your money. There are plenty of scam artists who view the annual ritual of filing tax returns as an opportunity to trick and defraud taxpayers. Criminals can make good money selling W2s and tax information, and identity theft provides even more ways to make a buck. Using fraudulent emails as a lure -- or phishing -- is a popular tactic among these opportunistic thieves.

That's a Wrap:  A Legislative Review

The 114th Congress (2015-2016) made its final push to pass legislation and wrapped up its work on Saturday. During each Congress, some 10,000 bills are introduced in the House and Senate, but only a select few (typically less than 5%) make it all the way through the process and are signed into law. Over the last two years, TECHPol has been following a number of federal legislative initiatives being considered in the House and Senate that affect small business and technology policy. 2016 Brings Good News on Taxes for Small Businesses

Taxing Benefits: What About Identity Theft Protection?

In a previous blog, we discussed what state law (VA) requires when a company is the victim of a data breach and personal information is compromised.  For example, a notice that tells someone their information may have been stolen must include, among other things, advice that directs the person to monitor their accounts and credit.   Some companies go beyond giving advice to actually providing credit monitoring services to victims, whether employees or consumers.   The IRS just announced that those benefits are not taxable.
